Lessons From A Slumdog Sales boy

An MBA or any similar management degree teaches you basics of economics, accounting, finance, marketing, human resource management, research methodology, business strategy.

Often B-school graduates, get a shocker when they enter into the corporate world and find there is a huge disconnect between the theory they studied and the tasks they perform on the field.Does that mean theory is irrelevant? definitely not.Its your ability to link the concepts and their relevant applications ,to see beyond the documents to get the big picture and the idea behind it.

Here, look how the uneducated “slumdog sales boy” (does is it sound offensive ??) sells small handiworks to the foreign tourists.

As a marketing graduate I am able to  identify the some of the concepts which are relevant to this boy’s strategy.

  • He understands the customer segments namely domestic and foreign tourists
  • He has targeted a niche segment i.e. foreign tourists who would be more profitable even though the sales volume might be low
  • He understands that many others will be selling the same item and his only way is to pitch it differently i.e. in international marketing terms “communication adaptation”
  • His multilingual ability gives him a competitive advantage over others selling the same item because business strategy tells us that distinctive capabilities are difficult to imitate than distinctive resources which are the main sources of competitive advantage.      So what’s the big deal ?….

If you are doing field sales and feel that all those concepts you learned are going to waste …think again…may be you can use those concepts and models to design your own selling procedure according to your industry. who knows ? if it clicks it may become a SOP in the  company itself….

Build Your World- As You Like It

Remember the "Construct " in The Matrix? where Morpheus says "It our 'loading program' We can load anything from clothing to equipment, weapons, training simulation, anything we need".

Imagine what if there is actually a program in which you can load anything, build whatever you want.It will be a place where only your mind is the limit.

The video below is a short film which shows a virtual program called World builder similar to the Construct. Please watch this "TechnoRomantic" brilliant piece of creativity.

If U Had A Bad Day.....this one is for you......

Where is the moment we needed the most
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
They tell me your blue skies fade to grey
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on
You stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee to go
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces everytime
And I don't need no carryin' on
Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
You had a bad day
Well you need a blue sky holiday
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carryin' on
You had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
(Oh.. Holiday..)

You had a bad day

Sometimes the system goes on the blink
And the whole thing turns out wrong
You might not make it back and you know
That you could be well oh that strong
And I'm not wrong
So where is the passion when you need it the most
Oh you and I
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
You've seen what you like
And how does it feel for one more time
You had a bad day
You had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad day

Microsoft's vision for 2019

I completely agree when Tiger says "Microsoft is trying to revive its image of a visionary company"  After all it was their vision to put a PC in every home in every desk.

Stephen Elop of  Microsoft Labs recently unveiled MS' vision for the next decade at the Wharton Business Technology Conference.

This is just a preview of the vision. Please do have a look at the full video here.

I firmly believe this trait to have a vision, to think beyond,to imagine the endless possibilities of what technology can achieve is what makes Microsoft stand out in the crowd.Sure Apple makes great products and Microsoft copies it. Sure Google , Yahoo etc makes access to information more simpler. But do they have a vision as to how will they play their parts in shaping the future? May be they do, May be they don't.

Unlike many other companies who  just have  long term business strategies with just  a financial perspective, Microsoft surely does have a vision and exactly knows what part it will play in shaping our future lives.

A Song for Me

Come on hold my hand,
I wanna contact the living.
Not sure I understand,
This role Ive been given.
I sit and talk to god
And he just laughs at my plans,
My head speaks a language, I dont understand.

I just wanna feel real love,
Feel the home that I live in.
cause I got too much life,
Running through my veins, going to waste.
I dont wanna die,
But I aint keen on living either.
Before I fall in love,
Im preparing to leave her.
I scare myself to death,
Thats why I keep on running.
Before Ive arrived, I can see myself coming.

I just wanna feel real love,
Feel the home that I live in.
cause I got too much life,
Running through my veins, going to waste.
And I need to feel, real love
And a life ever after.
I cannot get enough.

I just wanna feel real love,
Feel the home that I live in,
I got too much love,
Running through my veins, going to waste.
I just wanna feel real love,
In a life ever after
Theres a hole in my soul,
You can see it in my face, its a real big place.

Come and hold my hand,
I wanna contact the living,
Not sure I understand,
This role Ive been given
Not sure I understand.
Not sure I understand.
Not sure I understand.
Not sure I understand.

THE EARTH STANDS STILL AFTER 57 YEARS

Keanu Reeves is back with a sci-fi movie but not the one we would imageall expect. The Day the Earth Stood Still is a remake of the 1951 film of the same name. Directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, it is a story about  a alien messenger who comes with a warning that the humans will be killed for saving planet earth.

Look below the trailers of the old & new below

Although it looks funny now,the original was considered a neat movie as the timing was perfect .  The  director Scott Derrickson & writer by David Scarpa said they have reimagined the story. The cold war theme had been replaced by  environmental issues and spiced with a heavy dose of  CGI for "groundbreaking" visual effects.

The movie has already drawn flak from movie reviewers for relying heavily on visual and charm of  "Klaatu" Keanu killing the substance of the original.Rotten Tomatoes consensus says "Heavy on special effects, but without a coherent story at its base, The Day the Earth Stood Still is subpar re-imagining of the 1951 science-fiction classic"

So If  you like movies with lots of graphics , little story and Keanu Reeves, go ahead while it is "Still in Theatres"

Apocalypse coming in 2012

Mayan legend has it that  on 21.12.2012 , the B'ak'tun cycle in the Long Count of the Maya calendar gets completed and it is said that it will cause a major change in the world, more like a apocalypse due to tremendous natural disasters.

Now that's a great story to make a Hollywood blockbuster .Atleast Roland Emmerich thinks so. His last movie 10,000 B.C. was not very successful. But Roland says his next film "2012" will sure make up for it.This time he sticks to his formula of a apocalyptic disaster story with a huge budget which promises mind blowing visual effects.

The blockbuster director who gave hits like Independence Day,Godzilla, had earlier said he won't be doing any more disaster movies. His recent movies "The Day After Tomorrow" was also blockbuster based on effects of global warming . But Roland says "…This whole movie I'm doing next was inspired by just the phenomenon of the internet when you type in Google, '2012', you get 240 million hits. That's a lot. And it's just, so many people write about it, believe it, that our world comes to an end in 2012. I said wow. I kind of said before I will never do a disaster movie again. I said, for this idea I have to do it again."

                                                      Trailer of 2012

Hopefully we get to see the movie before the world ends...
